Treatment protocol Adult fish were anaesthetized in 0.4% Tricaine and secured, ventral side uppermost, in a slotted sponge. Watchmaker forceps were used to remove the surface scales and penetrate the skin, muscle and pericardial sac. Once exposed, the ventricle was gently pulled at the apex and cut with iridectomy scissors. After surgery, fish were immediately returned to system water.
Growth protocol Zebrafish were maintained at 28.5 C following standard methods

Extraction protocol Small RNA (<200 bp) was obtained employing the miRNeasy mini kit (Qiagen)
Label biotin
Label protocol Small RNA labeling was performed using FlashTag HSR labeling kit (Genesphere) using 200 ng of small RNA, which was polyA-tailed and biotin conjugated.
 
Hybridization protocol RNA was hybridized using GeneChip reagents (Affymetrix) and protocols as indicated by the manufacturer
Scan protocol Expression signals were scanned on an Affymetrix GeneChip Scanner 3000 7G.
