| Treatment protocol |
After collection the lichen material was stored at -20C in desiccated state. Prior to treatment, the material was brought back to room temperature. The desiccated lichen tissue was rewetted by spraiyng with tap water and placing the tissue on a wet dish cloth. Samples were collected at 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour and 3 hours after rewetting. After three hours of wetting the lichen tissue was left to dry in room temperature on a dry cloth and samples were collected at one, three, six and 24 hours of drying. The samples were immediately placed in liquid notrogen and ground with mortar and pestle and stored at -80C.

| Label protocol |
600 ng of total RNA was amplified and labelled with Cy3 using Agilent’s Quick Amp Labelling kit.

| Hybridization protocol |
1.65 μg of Cy3-labelled sample was hybridized to the array at 65°C overnight using Agilent’s Gene Expression Hybridization kit. The arrays were washed using Agilent’s Gene Expression Wash Pack and Stabilization and Drying solutions.

| Scan protocol |
The arrays were scanned with Agilent Technologies’ Scanner model G2565CA. The numerical data was produced with Agilent’s Feature Extraction software, version 10.5.1.1, using grid 024161_D_F_20090605, protocol GE1_105_Dec08 and QC metric set GE1_QCMT_Dec08.
