Design: Purified DNA was fragmented using the Covaris M220 Focused-ultrasonicatorTM and further processed using the Beckman Coulter SPRI-TETM instrument following the manufacturer's instructions. Clusters of flowcells were generated via the Illumina cBot cluster amplification system and the TruSeq PE Cluster Kit (v.2). Sequencing was carried out on an Illumina HighSeq2000 sequencer following manufacturer guidelines.

The goal of this study was to characterize the variable number of simple sequence repeats that are present in 20 distinct Neisseria meningitidis genomes. Deep sequencing data, generated for a subset of 5 of these genomes, were used to confirm the variability of the variable number simple sequence repeats identified by the 20-genomes comparative analysis.
