Zinc finger proteins, such as ZNF84, are nucleic acid-binding factors that function as transcriptional regulators (Rosati et al., 2001).
By screening a human placenta cDNA library using the H/C link region of the Drosophila Kruppel protein, Bellefroid et al. (1989) cloned ZNF84, which they called HPF2. The ZNF84 transcript contains an ATTTA RNA stability motif, but no Kozak consensus sequence. The deduced protein, depending on which start codon is used, contains 621, 650, or 651 amino acids and includes a C-terminal finger domain consisting of 19 finger repeats.
Rosati et al. (2001) determined that human ZNF84 contains KRAB-A and KRAB-B modules, in addition to the C-terminal zinc finger repeats.
Rosati et al. (2001) determined that the ZNF84 gene has 4 exons.
By FISH, Rosati et al. (2001) mapped the ZNF84 gene to chromosome 12q24.33.
