SOLUTE CARRIER FAMILY 22, MEMBER 23; SLC22A23

Alternative titles; symbols

CHROMOSOME 6 OPEN READING FRAME 85; C6ORF85

HGNC Approved Gene Symbol: SLC22A23

Cytogenetic location: 6p25.2     Genomic coordinates (GRCh38): 6:3,268,973-3,457,050 (from NCBI)

TEXT

Description

SLC22A23 belongs to a large family of transmembrane proteins that function as uniporters, symporters, and antiporters to transport organic ions across cell membranes (Jacobsson et al., 2007).

Cloning and Expression

By searching a human database for SLC22 family members, Jacobsson et al. (2007) identified SLC22A23. The deduced 405-amino acid protein has 12 putative transmembrane domains. Quantitative real-time PCR detected high expression of rat Slc22a23 in several brain regions and spinal cord, and in liver, skeletal muscle, and kidney. Moderate expression was detected in adipose tissue, lung, epididymis, and heart, and weaker expression was detected in several other tissues.

Gene Structure

Jacobsson et al. (2007) determined that the SLC22A23 gene contains 7 exons.

Mapping

Jacobsson et al. (2007) stated that the SLC22A23 gene maps to chromosome 6p25.2; the mouse Slc22a23 gene maps to chromosome 19qA3.3.
